Do you still use a towel to dry off, or do you prefer to wrap yourself in a cocoon of warmth and softness? This article will make you want to put your towels away for winter: it’s bathrobe season.
Imagine you’re Holly Golightly (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), and you’re climbing out your apartment via the fire escape to seek refuge at your neighbour’s – and sip whisky. Or you’re «the Dude» (The Big Lebowski), and all you really want to do is relax or go bowling, buy a new rug and drink White Russians, all to get caught up in a fake kidnapping. Or perhaps you’re Fran Fine (The Nanny), and you’re already better «dressed» than any other member of your household when you’re on your first cup of coffee in the morning. Then you’re probably wearing a bathrobe.
Of course, you don’t have to be a fictional character in a film or TV series to wrap yourself in terrycloth from head to toe. Just getting out of the shower in the morning is reason enough. Nevertheless, it has to be said: this garment is iconic and, in my opinion, completely underrated. Especially at this time of year. I’ve put together a list of nine bathrobes to help you be more Audrey Hepburn and Jeff Bridges in your everyday life. I’d add at least one to my shopping cart if I were you.
The classics
Plain colours, perhaps with subtle, refined details, high-quality, aka particularly fluffy, and at least knee-length – that’s all a good bathrobe needs. It might not sound like much. But just think of the warmth and comfort that will envelop you…
Made from waffle piqué
The waffle piqué counterparts aren’t quite as cuddly as the aforementioned cotton terrycloth models. Although thinner and airier to the touch, they look a little more elegant and can easily be worn as a housecoat.
With a hood
What’s even better than a cosy bathrobe? You’ve guessed it: a cosy bathrobe with a hood. Disclaimer: once you put one of these on, you might never want to take it off again. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
