The Esplar sneakers are named after the Brazilian NGO that provides technical support to the organic cotton farmers with whom Veja has collaborated for 25 years in northern Brazil. The chrome-free cowhide leather is smooth and lightweight. It comes from farms in southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and undergoes an innovative tanning process that uses neither chrome nor heavy metals or hazardous acids. By simplifying the tanning process, the use of chemicals and energy is reduced, water consumption is decreased by about 40%, and salt usage is cut by 80%. After tanning, the water can be reused.
