Product details
The watchmaking industry and Switzerland have gone hand in hand since the 16th century. The Huguenot religious refugees who fled to Switzerland to escape persecution in France brought with them a wealth of knowledge that continues to shape the local watchmaking industry to this day. Around 1550, the Reformer Jean Calvin issued a ban on the wearing and production of jewellery, which led jewellers and goldsmiths in Geneva to turn away from jewellery and put their newly acquired knowledge to good use. The modern Swiss watch industry is now world-renowned and can look back on yet another record year in 2022 in terms of demand for Swiss-made timepieces. This success story, spanning almost 400 years, is the reason why Swissmint commissioned and is now issuing this commemorative coin in honour of the watch industry. This coin is strictly limited to a mintage of just 4,750 pieces.
The coin’s design: The obverse depicts the heart of the watch – the movement – linked to the globe, symbolising the watch industry’s global renown. The reverse side of this strictly limited-edition coin features a cogwheel with the inscription “Confederation Helvetica”, the year of minting “2022” and the face value of “25 FR” – the first time a face value of this amount has been featured on a Swissmint gold coin.
