To put it a bit technically: In the physical vapor deposition (PVD) process for its black color, titanium nitride is heated to the point of becoming plasma, which adheres to the surface of the ring and forms a thin black ceramic layer that is bound at the molecular level. This coating is significantly stronger and more durable than conventional ones and is also better for the environment.
