Czech Mint Lion

In 2017, the Czech Mint launched its first bullion coin featuring the Czech lion. The coin is available in denominations of 10 oz, 5 oz, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/25 oz and, from 2026, also as 1/50 oz. The Czech heraldic animal, the Bohemian Lion, adorns the obverse of the coin. The first documented Bohemian lion was a symbol of the Přemyslid dynasty and appeared on the equestrian seal of Vladislav Henry from 1203. The lion was adopted as the emblem of the entire country by Ottokar II of Bohemia, the ‘Iron and Gold King’. Smaller denominations in particular, such as the 1/50 oz variant, offer an interesting opportunity to invest in physical gold. In this regard, they are a very good alternative to traditional silver ounces. The coin is delivered encapsulated, boasts high-quality minting and delights collectors every year with changing designs. Thanks to its handy size, the coin is also ideal as a gift – for example, as a beginner’s first gold coin. The coin is limited to a mintage of just 8,000 pieces. To mark the tenth anniversary of its issue, the design of the Czech lion was completely revamped and entrusted to a designer. The coins feature a completely redesigned relief and continue to depict the two-tailed Bohemian lion on the obverse – a realistically rendered national symbol with the Crown of St Wenceslas upon its head. Alongside the inscription ‘Česká republika’, the fine weight and fineness ‘1/50 oz Au .9999’ are also visible. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of King Charles III. Also visible are the year of issue ‘2026’, the name of the issuing country and the face value ‘2 dollars’ (NZD).
