Berk Medicine Buddha 21.5 cm

Buddha is not a surname, as one might think, but an honorific title awarded only to individuals who have achieved enlightenment through their own understanding. The man commonly referred to by this title is a historical figure. He likely lived between the 6th and 5th centuries BC in northern India and was known as Siddhartha Gautama before his enlightenment. The teachings he revealed (Dharma), which have undergone various developments over the centuries, along with the monastic order he founded, remain alive today, especially in recent years through the active efforts of Tibetan lamas here in the West.

The Medicine Buddha has the hand gesture of an Akshobya Buddha, but additionally holds a healing or herbal pot in his left hand. In Buddhism, he represents the healing of all ailments - including those of ignorance. Spiritual poisons create an unpeaceful mind in human beings, which in turn leads to physical and mental suffering.
