Gomasio (goma is the Japanese word for sesame and sio is the Japanese word for salt) is a mixture of sesame seeds and unrefined sea salt. The unrefined sesame seeds are lightly roasted separately and then ground together with the sea salt. Each tiny grain of salt is coated with the oil from the sesame seeds. It is a healthy and delicious seasoning that has a lower sodium content than pure salt. Calcium requires magnesium to be more easily deposited in the bones by the body. By combining sesame (which is very rich in calcium) and salt (rich in magnesium), Gomasio becomes an invaluable spice.
