The Bio Knospe label stands for comprehensive sustainable production and gentle processing. In agriculture and processing, significantly higher standards apply than in the Swiss or EU organic regulations.

The main differences between Bio Knospe and Swiss organic are: fewer additives and auxiliary substances (for example, a ban on unnecessary colorings and flavorings), regulations for environmentally friendly packaging materials and pest control measures, import restrictions when domestic supply is sufficient, and a ban on air transport. Stricter criteria apply for water and energy consumption, as well as social requirements such as ensuring the health and safety of employees, compensation for overtime, etc.

Operational measures to promote biodiversity, such as the maintenance of hedges, forest edges, dry stone walls, and beekeeping, are also part of the guidelines. There are stricter requirements for crop rotation, fertilization, and plant protection. All animals receive at least 90% Knospe feed, and ruminants at least 90% roughage. A code of conduct for fair trade relations is in place. The goal is to ensure gentle processing that preserves the naturalness and authenticity of the food. Bio Knospe products may contain raw materials from the EU or Switzerland.
