One of the main issues with eyelid margin inflammation (blepharitis) is the hardening of the secretions from the sebaceous glands located at the eyelid margin (Meibomian glands). This can lead to crust formation on the eyelid edge and eyelashes. The heat treatment softens the crusts at the eyelid margin and the secretions of the Meibomian glands. As a result, the crusts can be removed more easily, and the secretions can be easily expressed during subsequent eyelid massage. Therefore, it is extremely important for maintaining or improving the function of the Meibomian glands.

However, the heat treatment is only effective if a warm, moist environment is maintained at a constant temperature of about 45 °C for 5 to 10 minutes.
