Functions of Lysine:

• Antiviral, counteracting the amino acid arginine, which is necessary for the replication of the herpes virus.
• Lysine is involved in the body's synthesis of carnitine (energy and fat metabolism).
• Bone health: Lysine appears to enhance calcium absorption and optimize the activity of bone-forming cells, known as osteoblasts.
• Functions as a building block for proteins and a component of collagen, together with L-Glycine and L-Proline.

Applications:

• Lysine is used to reduce the recurrence of herpes labialis infections and the resulting cold sores. It is believed that lysine may inhibit the reproduction of the virus.

Dosage:

• For an acute herpes infection, 3 g of lysine per day is recommended; for prophylaxis, 1.5 g.
• Deficiency symptoms, susceptibility to infections, low carnitine blood levels.
• Insufficient lysine intake in a vegan diet. Lysine is found in lower amounts in plant sources compared to animal sources.
