In 1752, King Frederik V of Denmark commissioned the Flora Danica, which was to include all the flowers and plants of the kingdom, to bring the knowledge of the country's nature closer to the people. Completing the work took more than 120 years in total. In the end, over 3200 color illustrations were printed in 54 volumes.
