Omega-3 fatty acids are among the vital oleic acids. The omega-3 fatty acid DHA in particular is considered an important component of cell membranes in the brain and eyes and maintains the functionality of these organs. Omega-3 fatty acids are among the essential long-chain, polyunsaturated fatty acids. Essential means that the body is not able to produce omega-3 itself. It has to obtain it from food, especially fish. Fatty acids from oily fish can have a positive effect on the fluidity of the blood, blood pressure and heart rhythm. The most important omega-3 fatty acids, which are mainly found in oily fish, include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Polyunsaturated fatty acids, which include omega-3, react very quickly with oxygen in the body and oxidise. It is therefore advisable to supply the body with antioxidant vitamin E at the same time.
