L-citrulline is a non-essential (conditionally essential) amino acid micronutrient that the body cannot produce in sufficient quantities itself, especially under high levels of stress, which is why supplementation may be necessary. In fruit, citrulline is found in large quantities in watermelon, for example. The synergistic combination of the amino acid L-citrulline with malic acid results in L-citrulline malate. Malic acid (malate) is an organic acid that occurs naturally (for example in apples). The amino acid L-citrulline is the basis for the production of the amino acids L-arginine and L-ornithine.
