If your nose is unable to supply your lungs with enough oxygen (due to allergies, a nasal fracture, etc.), your body compensates by breathing through the mouth. During sleep, your mouth is often open. Without support, the jaw falls down and back, along with the tongue and soft tissue in the throat. This narrows or blocks the airway. The body then tries harder to obtain the necessary oxygen.
