"However, the plastic tubes should not be filled with liquids, as the cork cannot be pressed into the glass like a bottle." OK, I get it, nothing liquid. But how do you close the tubes properly, if not by pressing the corks in? Is the cork just for decoration and is placed loosely.

I screwed the cork in a little bit and it worked fine. So it shouldn't be a problem to close it. And I wouldn't put any liquid in either. The cork doesn't look quite so tight. For me, the corks are about 5 mm in the glass and hold well.
