Each Lego hub in the locomotive supports several Bluetooth channels. Then you can automate with the official Lego app and a smartphone or tablet. Or with pybricks and python code. Some people use Arduinos with Bluetooth modules to automate. You can also connect 2 hubs to a single Lego remote control, if for example you combine 2 sets to make a single large train. It's also possible to control several trains on the same tracks... As far as I'm concerned, my son has his train and Dad has his and we play together, each with his own remote control, on the same track.
