Product details

The Nike of Samothrace is a Greek sculpture of the goddess of victory, Nike, which is currently located in the Louvre in Paris.

It was discovered in the Sanctuary of the Cabeiri on the Greek island of Samothrace. It is believed that Rhodian sculptors created the statue.

Nike was the Greek goddess of victory. She was regarded as the embodiment of victory and the personification of earthly glory. Nike was invoked for victory in both wartime and peaceful athletic competitions. Alexander the Great erected victory altars in her honor and established the Nikaia festival, which was dedicated to the goddess of victory herself.

When the Romans conquered Greece, they adopted the goddess Nike, like most other Greek deities, into their own cult of gods, worshipping Nike (Roman: Victoria) primarily as the goddess of victory in glorious battles rather than in athletic competitions. The English term "Victory" is derived from her name and means victory, success, or triumph.

The artist who created this miniature has reproduced the original in minute detail and captured the elegance of the figure in his art. Made of art stone, bronzed and colored by the artist. From the Veronese collection.
