Trauffer Appenzell Pointed Crested Chicken

ProSpecieRara The Spitzhaubenhuhn has a very long history and is believed to have been bred in monasteries as early as the 15th century. These lively crested chickens are ideally adapted to mountain conditions. They excel at climbing, can fly exceptionally well, and their feathered crests protect their small combs from harsh winter frosts.

In the past, almost every region of Switzerland had its own farm animal breeds. Many of these breeds became extinct around and after the world wars. Among the animal breeds that have survived, several are still endangered today. Since 1982, they have been supported by the ProSpecieRara Foundation along with many dedicated animal keepers. The traditional company Trauffer Wooden Toys has, in collaboration with ProSpecieRara, dedicated an elaborately hand-carved collection to these endangered animals to raise awareness of the rare breeds. Additionally, 50 cents from the proceeds of each wooden animal goes to ProSpecieRara projects for endangered animals.
