Mies van Hout was born in 1962 and studied graphic design at the Art Academy in Groningen. Since 1989, she has been working as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, and has illustrated over 100 picture books. She manages to transform feelings into characters and images in an unusual yet very convincing way using simple means. Her picture books continually hold up a mirror to us: monsters are friends, fish have moods, and an octopus seeks help. Mies van Hout's illustrations are characterized by great depth and brilliance of color. They visualize emotions in a unique way, allowing the viewer to see their own emotional world from a distance and thus open up new ways to talk about it.
