The Hanoverian is a breed of warmblood; warmbloods are a mixture of light and heavy horse. It is one of the oldest and most numerous warmbloods. Its history dates back to the 17th century when Spanish, Oriental and Neapolitan stallions were imported into Germany. They were bred to native mares, possibly with an early war horse pedigree, and developed the Holsteiner here.
