The 1978 Swedish Grand Prix was the debut and only race of one of the most unusual ideas in Formula 1 history. The Brabham BT 46B "Fan Car" took a standard BT 46 with a flat 12-cylinder engine from Alfa Romeo and added a large fan at the rear of the car, which sucked air through the engine's water radiator before utilizing an even more effective version of the ground effect pioneered by the Lotus 79 to create a vacuum under the car. This resulted in enormous downforce, allowing Niki Lauda to pull ahead right at the start of the race. After the race, the car was confirmed as legal but was removed by Brabham to avoid a confrontation with other team owners, as owner Bernie Ecclestone sought to prevent any disputes. Designer Gordon Murray created numerous race and championship cars. The fan car is now an important legacy of one of the most innovative periods in F1 history and fits perfectly alongside the otherwise dominant Lotus 79. Thanks to the Twin Pack of the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix, you can now relive this spectacular race at home.
