The modern BR 23 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn "survived" the Prussian P 8 – which it was intended to replace – by only one year. It delivered 1,314 kW, weighed 131.8 tons, and could travel at a speed of 110 km/h forward or 85 km/h with the tender leading. On December 31, 1971, 76 units were in service, all stationed at three railway depots (Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern, and Crailsheim). After the official retirement in December 1975, 8 specimens have been preserved in partially operational condition by clubs and museums for future generations.
