The name of the wagons is derived from their production site, the Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk (Raw) Halberstadt. In the 1980s, production began of a side-aisle compartment express train coach without air conditioning that was oriented towards the UIC-Z specifications. The new coaches were painted in the DR's green-beige livery, which became mandatory for all express train coaches from the mid-1980s onwards. In addition to their use in express train service within the German Democratic Republic, the coaches were frequently found in transit and international trains.
