Diesel-electric double locomotive 288 002 of the German Federal Railways. Complete new design! In 1941 and 1942, a total of four double locomotives of the type D 311 were put into service by the German Wehrmacht. They were built for the transport of heavy railway artillery. Two locomotives, V 188 001 a/b and V 188 002 a/b, were further used by the German Federal Railways after the war. A third locomotive served as a donor for spare parts. They proved themselves in heavy freight train and push-pull service, primarily on the Spessart ramp. After a generator failure, V 188 001 had to be taken out of service as early as 1968. V 188 002, later 288 002, remained in operation in the Franconian region until 1972. In 1973, both machines were scrapped.
