In 2019, ÖBB launched an upgrade program for the renewal of double-decker trains (DOSTO). Approximately 100 cars will be optimized to modern Cityjet standards by 2023. The modernization includes onboard Wi-Fi, new seat upholstery, multifunctional areas in each intermediate car with more space for bicycles, strollers, and luggage, as well as newly designed relaxation zones. In May 2022, halfway through the ongoing DOSTO upgrade program, the electric locomotive 1116 181 was painted in Cityjet design. This marks an important step by ÖBB towards attractive offerings in public transport. The locomotive is not only used in front of Cityjet trains but also in regular passenger and freight transport.
