Alpine Craftsmanship: The Silhouette
Alpine pastures and typical wooden chalets, cut out of black paper – this craftsmanship has a long-standing tradition.
The region of Saanenland, Pays d’Enhaut, and Simmental is referred to by connoisseurs as the "cradle of silhouette art." This is also where the "father of Swiss silhouette art" hails from. In the 19th century, local resident Johann Jakob Hauswirth was the first to create the now-traditional black-and-white silhouettes featuring subjects from alpine daily life. Originally, this art form, or craft of silhouette cutting, made its way to Central Europe around the year 1600, traveling over a century-long path from Indonesia. The traditional form – black-and-white, depicting subjects of alpine farming life and in symmetrical shapes – is no longer the only form of silhouette art today. As in all art forms, the outcome depends on the artist's preferences – silhouettes can be found in all colors, shapes, and variations.
One of the most well-known contemporary silhouette artists in Switzerland is Regina Martin. For about 40 years, the Saanenland native has been meticulously hand-cutting beautiful paper artworks in her studio in Schönried, offering courses and advocating for her passion as president of the "Scherenschnitt Schweiz" association. From a young age, she was fascinated by the craft and sought tips for the fine art from local silhouette icon Christian Schwizgebel, among others. Did you know that a silhouette subject from Regina Martin's scissors served as the template for the forearm tattoo of Swiss dialect pop singer Trauffer?
