Two players sit opposite each other and take turns moving the chess pieces on the board. The objective of the game is to checkmate the opponent, meaning the opposing king cannot defend itself or escape. The game board consists of 64 alternating black and white squares. There are a total of 32 chess pieces on the board, 16 white and 16 black. Each player has the following pieces available: eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, two queens, and one king. Each piece has its own way of moving.
