Freely based on the motto "If you want to exist forever, you must perish first!" a hundred thousand birds embark on a journey to their spiritual homeland. Led by the wise hoopoe, who once learned the craft of purifying hearts and guiding souls from the wise prophet-king Solomon (peace be upon him), he skillfully leads his companions through seven valleys. In these valleys, they delve into the mysteries of search, love, knowledge, selflessness, unity, astonishment, and self-annihilation. At the end of this journey, which is both arduous and enlightening, only 30 brave travelers remain, fully purified, arriving at the legendary Bird King Simurgh, who welcomes them into the realm of eternal existence. Ali Shir Navai (1441 - 1501) tells us in the language of the birds how we can cleanse our hearts of attachments to this world until nothing remains but God alone. To do this, he draws on the treasure of wisdom from the friends of God over 800 years of Islam, sharing with us wonderful examples, memorable comparisons, and uplifting stories that allow us to spiritually grow.
