The Canton of Geneva joined the Swiss Confederation in 1815. It has a modest area but a dense population. Geneva, the capital of the canton and the second-largest city in Switzerland, is located between the Alps and the Jura mountains at the southwestern end of Lake Geneva. The Rhône and the Arve are the two main rivers that flow through the city. As a hub in the center of Western Europe, Geneva has a privileged geographical location that allows access to several major metropolises in less than two flight hours. Known as the city of peace and historically a welcoming place, Geneva hosts numerous international organizations, including the UN, WHO, UNHCR, ICRC, WTO, around 200 NGOs, and 150 missions. Furthermore, Geneva is one of the most important conference and congress cities in the world.
As an international city par excellence, it is a fantastic melting pot where all cultures are represented. Its lake, the Jet d'eau, its 25 large parks, including the famous Eaux-Vives, Jardin Botanique, La Grange, and Mon Repos parks, and its two trees per inhabitant make it a green city with remarkable quality of life. As a city of the arts, with its concert halls, theaters, museums, art galleries, antique shops, and major auctions, it has always had significant cultural influence. Geneva is a city where life is good: it has the energy of a metropolis but has remained a city of human scale. In just a few minutes, one can go from the historic center of the old town to a beautiful landscape surrounded by vineyards, nature, and large wineries. So, discover this canton full of treasures and heritage by strolling through the vineyards of Anières, the marketplace of Carouge, the Patek Philippe Museum, the Château de Jussy, or the Place des Nations.
