The massive monster known as Solomon Grundy is considered the reincarnation of a man named Cyrus Gold. When he fell into the Slaughter Swamp of Gotham City and died, Gold was reborn as a creature made of rotting wood and swamp mud, nearly mindless yet capable of remembering the Solomon Grundy nursery rhyme from which his name is derived. Originally an enemy of Green Lantern (Alan Scott) and the Justice Society, Grundy's nearly immortal form kept him in his "prime" for decades.
