Years before the saga of Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher: L'Ancien Monde delves into an era when monsters roamed the continent in great numbers, posing a constant threat that required the attention of monster hunters known as wizards.

Five competing schools trained their adepts through brutal regimes. Once prepared, these now-recognized wizards traveled the land in search of challenges and adventures, helping others and earning money.

In this competitive adventure game, 2 to 5 players traverse a vast map, embark on magical quests, meet other players for monetary rewards, make ambiguous moral decisions, and fight against monsters and sometimes other wizards to defend the honor of their school.

Players can create their own unique card decks by choosing from a variety of abilities: attacks, quests, and combat magic known as "signs." Through the synergy of the cards, players aim to create powerful combinations by effectively utilizing the abilities of their wizard school. Quests, battles, and even dice games allow each player to earn money, acquire new items, and further develop their skills.

The first player to win 4 to 6 trophies, the number of which is determined at the start of the game, wins immediately. Trophies can be earned by defeating monsters, engaging in chaotic tavern fights against other players, maximizing attributes, and completing specific quests throughout the adventure.

The game also features a solo mode that allows players to experience a solo adventure on the continent.
