Magic: The Gathering by Richard Garfield is a collectible card game designed as a quick game for casual play. The game primarily targets role-players, students, and schoolchildren, with a clear focus on fantasy fans. When the author offered the game to Wizards of the Coast, the company was in a crisis. The game, which was inexpensive to produce, was welcomed with open arms, and the company was excited about the idea. Thanks to Magic: The Gathering, it experienced a huge resurgence and has since been acquired by the gaming corporation Hasbro.

Magic cards have been printed in eleven languages since 2011. Players create their own individual decks according to specified rules and duel against each other. There are deck ideas and card combinations with virtually endless possibilities. Each expansion introduces new cards and mechanics to the game, providing variety in deck building. In September 2019, a completely digital version of the game was also released. MTG: Arena has already celebrated some successes and has built a large fan base.
