In the procurement program of the young German Federal Railways, an electric locomotive for express trains was also to be included. This led to the creation of the E 10 series, later reclassified as series 110, which featured a stylish cobalt blue paint job. Its top speed was 150 km/h. However, over the years, this speed was deemed insufficient by railway strategists, prompting the development of the subclass 110.3. These machines were allowed to push the speedometer higher, reaching 160 km/h. Visually, the locomotives captivated many with their aerodynamic front, earning them the nickname "Bügelfalte" (Pleat). The 110.3 once pulled famous trains like the "Rheingold," attracting much attention. Later, they proved themselves on car-carrying trains, traveling via Austria to the Slovenian border at Jensenice. They earned their keep pulling regional trains from Munich to Innsbruck. Naturally, the 110.3 also received the now-popular orient red color scheme with the characteristic bib.
