Märklin 39790 H0 Steam locomotive BR 78 of the DB

Every 78 series locomotive is somewhat different. Starting in 1912, the T 18 was developed as one of the most successful German tender locomotives, featuring a symmetrical design with three coupled axles, two bogies, large water tanks, and a maximum speed of 100 km/h in both directions. The 78 054, which served as a model for Märklin, was among the first deliveries of the T 18. It was built in 1916, like almost all machines, at the Stettiner Vulcan Works and retained the Prussian round roof of the driver's cab until its retirement. However, during a later major inspection, a newer boiler with three boiler fittings was installed, changing the original appearance of the 78 054, as was the case with many other sister locomotives.

The 78 054 began its service as T 18 8411 in the Erfurt Directorate at the Naumburg depot, where it remained until 1926/27. It was then transferred to the Hamburg Directorate, initially to the Hamburg-Altona depot and by 1936 at the Hamburg Berl depot. The last change of directorate occurred in March 1948 to Hanover. There, it was in service at the Hanover Hgbf depot until 1963, before briefly moving to the Hildesheim depot. However, it was soon classified as a "z" (out of service) and was retired shortly thereafter on July 1, 1964.
