Product details

In the 1920s, the Austrian Federal Railways (BBÖ) decided to electrify the most important routes as quickly as possible. Specifically designed for the mountain gradients, seven mountain express locomotives of the series 1100 (known as series 1089 by the ÖBB), developed based on Swiss models, were delivered to the BBÖ in 1923/24. The 20,350 mm long machines consisted of two closely coupled driving bogies, on which a short machine bridge with a transformer, a sliding switchgear, and two driver’s cabs were flexibly mounted. Due to their long, low, and narrow front hoods on the driving bogies, the nickname "Crocodile" quickly became established, as these machines looked the most "crocodilian" of all "crocodiles." Because they proved to be very effective, nine replicas were delivered in 1926/27 as 1100.101-109 (ÖBB: 1189.01-09), which achieved higher speeds due to a changed gear ratio and were equipped with more powerful motors.

Prototype: Electric locomotive series 1189 Austrian Crocodile of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). Blood orange base color. Operating number 1189.02. Operational condition in the mid/late 1970s.

Two driving wheels in each of the two bogies driven via cardan shafts. Traction tires. Curve-friendly articulated chassis. Direction-dependent three-light front signal and a red rear light conventionally operable, digitally switchable. Lighting switchable to a white rear light. Front signal on locomotive sides 2 and 1 can each be separately digitally turned off. Double A-light function. Driver's cab and machine room lighting can each be separately digitally switched. Lighting with maintenance-free warm white and red LEDs. Highly detailed metal construction with many separately applied details.
