LGB 22963G Diesel locomotive 2095 of the ÖBB

This locomotive is being presented along with the matching cars to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Pinzgauer Local Railway. In the late 1950s, the narrow-gauge railways operated by the ÖBB, with a track gauge of 760 mm, still had a significant number of steam locomotives in service, many of which were quite old. To make operations on these lines more efficient, the ÖBB decided to procure suitable diesel locomotives. Between 1958 and 1962, a total of 15 units of the 2095 series were delivered by Simmering-Graz-Pauker. These four-axle locomotives, weighing 31 tons and measuring 10.40 meters in length, could achieve a significant acceleration of train operations with their 600 horsepower and a top speed of 60 km/h. A characteristic feature of these small yet compact locomotives is the rod drive in the bogies, which was necessary because only one wheelset in each bogie could be driven directly via the gearbox. Interestingly, the design of the locomotive body for the first three locomotives – the prototypes – differed from the series, as they were equipped with a steam heating boiler that was not included in the series production. Even today, at 65 years old, these locomotives are still in operation, primarily on the Pinzgauer Railway, but also on other narrow-gauge railways in Austria.
