In inland shipping, two or four barges are usually coupled together to form a rigid ship convoy. The number depends on the width of the waterway of a river or canal. Due to its box-like shape, the barge has a shallow draft. The movable hatches allow for covering the ship's cargo of ore, sand, or grain; for transporting containers, the hatches are removed.
