Board and dice games, ball and competitive games, as well as other forms of leisure activities, provide insight into the culture of a society, often revealing more than dry historical facts. Above all, they make a culture tangible when played. Games like Hnefatafl, Halatafl, Wurfzabel, Bell and Hammer, and Kubb are exciting, sometimes quite challenging, and at other times jovial and robust. Yet they always guarantee enjoyable afternoons and evenings even today. One doesn't have to risk everything, as was sometimes the case with the Germans.
