From 1960 to 1982, the DR procured shunting locomotives of the V 60 series. Despite receiving positive feedback from personnel and workshops, several improvements were made after the delivery of the first series. The adhesive weight was increased to 60 tons by adding a 5-ton ballast weight. The most noticeable external change was to the driver's cab, which was now the same width as the frame and featured a sunshade roof. The improved design was delivered from 1964 onwards as V 60.12 and was classified as series 106 after the numbering system was changed at the DR.
