Yoshi is known as Mario's loyal companion in the plumber's adventures to rescue Princess Peach and thwart the evil plans of the menacing Bowser. Yoshi was originally conceived as a type of Koopa but eventually evolved into the design we all know and love. The shell was transformed into a saddle for Mario to ride on, and Yoshi was given a more dinosaur-like appearance to distinguish the two characters. Aside from Mario's abilities to shoot fireballs with the Fire Flower and gain temporary invincibility with the Super Star, the duo can defeat their enemies with Yoshi's unique powers. Yoshi can swallow his foes with his extended tongue and gain special abilities based on the enemy consumed, or lay them into eggs that can either serve as projectiles or hatch into power-up items for Mario, depending on the video game title. Even after all these years, Mario remains the face of Nintendo, and since Yoshi's debut, the beloved green dinosaur has become a staple in the Mario franchise.
