The main thing is an app for everything. The thing is probably constantly phoning home and transmitting your data, which they can then sell for a profit.

It doesn't have to be the recommended app, we use the "Smart Life" (Tuya) app, for example, which in turn synchronises with Apple Home. I have not tried the latter specifically or directly, but the chances are good ;-)
