Do I need the Bosch Smart Home Controller II for the Bosch Smart Home Smoke Detector II in order to use the smoke detector?

In my experience, yes. I therefore returned it and bought a Fibaro Smoke Detector, which I am very happy with.
No. I run everything via the old controller 1.0
The smoke detector can also be coupled with neutral Zigbee coordinators.
