Weed-free raised bed in a natural way

A well-maintained raised bed is a feast for the eyes. The Windhager jute weed mat for raised beds requires little effort but brings a lot of joy: weed growth is minimized naturally – simply by depriving it of light. Only what is meant to grow will thrive. This allows for a complete avoidance of chemical weed killers, and time-consuming weeding becomes a thing of the past.

Jute has the ability to retain water, keeping the soil moist and warm. This benefits the plants, especially during the summer months, allowing them to grow and ripen well. At the same time, the mat acts as a sunshade – the soil does not dry out as much and remains loose. Jute decomposes completely after a few years and can therefore remain in the soil or be disposed of in the compost bin or organic waste. Alternatively, the mulch mat could be removed from the bed at the end of the season, cleaned, dried, and stored for reuse the following year.

Tips & tricks for application

The best time: in spring, when planting seedlings. The jute mat is cut in a cross shape where the plants are located and then placed directly on the soil of the bed. The pre-grown plants stick out from the fabric, while unwanted plants are deprived of light, thus inhibiting their growth. Once the jute weed mat is positioned, the edges should ideally be secured all around with pegs, stones, or soil to prevent it from shifting or blowing away in wind and weather. Thanks to its water- and air-permeable properties, the jute fabric can remain in place while watering the bed.
