Figure 1 shows the rotary dimmer where the knob protrudes from the plate. Picture 2 shows the rotary dimmer flush with the cover plate. Which picture is correct?

The mechanics of my dimmer are faulty (the spring on the push-button seems to be rather depressed.... and I have to press it several times to get the light on my low-voltage ceiling light to come on...once it's on, the dimmer works perfectly, I can increase or decrease the light intensity as I like...). In your opinion, can I just buy this part and change my dimmer myself?

I have also replaced my pressure switch myself, but if I were you I would first check whether it is really just the pressure switch, which you can buy here, or whether the problem is more likely to be with the dimmer itself, which is installed behind the pressure switch.
