The sugar content in the wort is an important indicator for the brewer during beer production. The wort refers to the nutrient content before the fermentation process begins. The digital beer refractometer from PCE has been specifically designed to determine the sugar content in the wort. This way, the brewer can assess the potential alcohol content of the beer to be produced, as the sugar content is crucial for the final alcohol level of the brewed beer.

The beer refractometer is an instrument that relies on measuring the refractive index of a liquid. With the help of the beer refractometer, the user can measure the sugar concentration in the wort using just a small sample. To obtain a meaningful result, it is sufficient to place a few drops of the liquid into the stainless steel well of the device. A prism is embedded in the sample well, and the sugar concentration in the wort is measured through light refraction.

The integrated light source in the digital beer refractometer prevents measurement errors that can quickly occur with an analog beer refractometer due to artificial light sources such as fluorescent lamps. The measurement result is quickly and accurately displayed on the large, easy-to-read LC display of the beer refractometer after automatic temperature compensation (10 to 40 degrees Celsius). The user can choose between two different measurement units: Brix (0 to 50.00%) and D20/20 or relative density (1.000 to 1.130). Additionally, the display provides information about the measured temperature of the liquid thanks to an integrated temperature indicator.
