Washers provide a smooth surface for the nut or screw to rest on, making it less likely to loosen due to an uneven fastening surface. Zinc coatings prevent the oxidation of the protected metal and ensure a longer-lasting surface. This is achieved by forming a barrier and acting as a sacrificial anode when this barrier is damaged.
