Show more Ferodo brake pad set In a brake pad, a friction material is applied to a backing plate. Both together form the actual brake lining. Sometimes brake pads are also called brake pads or brake blocks. Brake pads are used in disc brakes. Here, the brake pads are pressed onto the rotating disc, which results in the vehicle being braked. Due to the resulting friction, the brake pads wear out and therefore have to be replaced regularly. The friction material on brake pads consists of various metals and other additives that give the brake pad the desired properties, such as low wear, high heat resistance and extreme load capacity. However, it can also consist of organic materials. These materials are bonded together under high heat and then applied to the backing plate under high pressure and heat or by riveting. There are different types of brake pads. The main ones to mention are ceramic and organic brake pads. Until 20 years ago, asbestos was also added to brake linings. Brake pads develop their optimum effect only after a certain running-in period. All brake pads sold in Switzerland must comply with the ECE-R-90 standard.
