How professionals drill

Drill selection: For metals: use high-performance high-speed steel (HSS) drill bits. For carbide or stainless steel: use drill bits with a titanium coating or made from a cobalt alloy. Center punching: Mark the drilling location by scoring with a scribing needle. Position a hardened center punch and center punch the drilling location with a short hammer blow – this prevents the drill bit from slipping. For HSS drill bits with a cross grind, center punching may be omitted.
