Show more Brembo brake disc They are almost always attached to the brake hub. During braking, the brake pads press on the disc brake and reduce the rotational speed of the disc and thus of the entire vehicle. Brake discs are usually made of grey cast iron or also steel alloys. Just like the brake pads, the brake disc wears out. However, it wears more slowly than the pads. Brake discs heat up very strongly during frequent braking operations and must therefore be able to withstand the highest demands. To withstand extreme loads, there are also discs made of carbon and ceramic. In order to achieve increased heat resistance, brake discs are sometimes heat-treated. After production, the discs are heated up and cooled down again. There are also ventilated brake discs. Perforated or slotted brake discs have a better braking effect in wet conditions, because their recesses allow the water on the disc to be removed more quickly and effectively. Another advantage is that dirt, such as brake dust, disappears from the brake disc more quickly.
