The breakaway cable is an additional connection between the trailer and the vehicle. In case of a problem, the breakaway cable serves as an emergency solution. You must not use this cable to pull your trailer forward.
Unbraked trailer
For unbraked trailers, the breakaway cable ensures that the car and trailer remain connected. If your trailer detaches, it cannot lift off. As the driver, you can then attempt to brake in a controlled manner to limit damage.
Braked trailer
The breakaway cable works differently for braked trailers. The goal is not to keep the trailer close to the vehicle. The breakaway cable activates the brake.
If the trailer detaches, the overrun brake and the car remain connected via the cable. As the distance between the two increases, the breakaway cable pulls on the brake. Then the cable breaks, causing the trailer to come to a stop.
